Full Day Kampong Khleang & Boeng Mealea Temple Full day tour explores the real life of Cambodian local people living on Tonle Sap Lake (Kampong Khleang). Take the boat cruise to visit the fishing villages and learn about the world’s second largest freshwater Tonle Sap Lake. Visit one of the most mysterious temples at Angkor - Boeng Mealea. START at 7.00 am depart your hotel with a few stops on the way for the one hour journey to the world’s second largest freshwater lake, magnificent ‘Tonle Sap’. Here, board your boat and head onto the lake, passing the village of Kampong Khleang and viewing daily life on the water. This village is a mix of high stilt houses, built above the highest water level, and floating houses. Cruise through the village and see the unique houses on stilts and the daily life of the village. Our boat will meander slowly through village and grassland canals, allowing you to catch glimpses of flora and fauna and see a truly beautiful eco-system, before emerging onto the Tonle Sap lake itself. (Suggested visit period is between end July and early March) Return your journey with another one hour through scenic rural Cambodia to Boeng Mealea temple. Mid-day we arrive at King Suryavarman II’s eleventh century Boeng Mealea temple – a prototype for the more famous Angkor Wat. Enjoy Khmer Lunch at local restaurant and relax before continue to explore. Boeng Mealea stands almost forgotten in the jungle and getting to the site is quite an adventure in itself. Isolated during Cambodia's civil war, Boeng Mealea was under the control of the Khmer Rouge for decades but has since been ‘de-mined’ and outsiders can now safely visit this temple. It is the largest temple outside the main Angkor complex and in places it is remarkably intact, but in other places utterly destroyed; tree roots envelop many of the temple walls and doorways. The atmosphere here is eerie but a welcome contrast to the more visited temples closer to Angkor Wat. Boeng Mealea shares many characteristics with Angkor Wat, but on a smaller scale. It has three encircling galleries, the same four gates and entrances, and a pair of interior libraries. It differs from Angkor Wat in having only one central tower instead of the famous five towers of Angkor Wat. Return to Siem Reap.
